The idea of creating a businessman-turned-superhero was thought up by Stan Lee, the editor of Marvel Comics, scripter Larry Lieber, character designer, Jack Kirby and story-artist Don Heck in the early 1960’s. The character first appeared in short stories as part of Tales of Suspense and was first featured as an anti-communist, but as the story line developed over the years, he was also depicted in various other roles, including a recovering alcoholic. The original themes explored surrounded the Cold War, but went on to incorporate the Gulf War and Afghanistan.
